CUNY Service Corps 2015Would you like to make a meaningful difference in the community? Would you like to earn $3,500 and possibly receive credits toward your college degree? If so, the CUNY Service Corp is the right program for you!

Service Corps members are part of a University cohort of students practicing service that is aligned with their civic and professional goals. Service placements last twenty-four weeks over two semesters. Participants work 12 hours per week, are paid $12/hour and in some instances earn college credit.

The program is organized around themes that represent both opportunity and need:

  • A Healthier City:Corps members address important community and public health issues, such as chronic disease management, childhood obesity, lead poisoning prevention, infant mortality, violence prevention, nutrition, and food security.
  • A More Resilient and Greener City:Corps members support projects related to improving the city’s built and green infrastructure and making it more resistant to storm-related damage.
  • A Better Educated City:Corps members offer valuable supports to students of all ages, such as those in early childhood programs (and their families and caretakers), public middle and high school students, fellow CUNY students struggling with academic and personal challenges, and adult students learning English or preparing to take the High School Equivalency examination.
  • An Economically Stronger City:Corps members focus on small business development, local budgeting, fundraising for nonprofits and community issues, financial literacy as well as helping eligible families to access tax credits in order to bolster the economic viability and success of distressed communities within the city.

The CUNY Service Corps builds on the University’s legacy and on the service-learning, community service, and internship programs currently in place at the University.  By providing on-the-ground support to a wide range of non-profit and civic endeavors, Medgar Evers College students participating in the CUNY Service Corps will increase the availability of valuable services to New Yorkers and become more engaged in their communities throughout the city.  For more information on how you can apply today, please contact Raschaad Hoggard (shoggard@mec.cuny.edu).

New York Blood Center Announces A Blood Emergency

While winter storm Juno may have caused more panic than actual snowfall, roadway shutdowns and public transportation delays and halts led to a mass cancellation of blood drives across our region between Monday and Thursday as we prepared for the storm and its aftermath. NYBC estimates 3,000 scheduled donations have been lost – the largest single loss since Superstorm Sandy.

All MEC faculty, students and staff are encouraged to give the gift of life by donating blood.  The New York Blood Center needs an approximated 2,000 people a day to roll up their sleeves to donate blood.  Without volunteer donors, our community would not have an adequate community blood supply.  Four million Americans each year benefit from life-saving transfusions.  In fact, one of every three people will need a life-saving transfusion sometime during their lifetime.

Did you know?

  • Only 2% of New Yorkers donate blood, compared with 5% nationwide;
  • Over 2,200 pints of blood are needed every day to meet the needs of patients in hospitals in New York and New Jersey; and,
  • One pint of blood can save up to three lives because blood can be divided into different components.

The MEC blood drive is open to the public and is conveniently located!  Volunteer donors must a present a valid photo/signature ID and should eat a well-balanced meal before giving blood.  A social security number is not required. For information, please contact the Office of Health Services at (718) 270-6075 or the Office of Student Life and Development at (718) 270-6050.

Previous social work conferences have featured special guest speakers such as former NYC Deputy Mayor and CUNY Trustee Hon. Carol Robles–Roman, Esq., former NYC School’s Chancellor Hon. Dennis Walcott, Dr. David Clifton Banks, Founding Principal of the Eagle Academy for Young Men, Terrie Williams, MSW, author and motivational speaker, Human Rights Commissioner Chair Patricia Gatling, and Nan Henderson, a nationally renowned expert on resiliency and student support.
